If buying an expensive USB mod for backing up your games is not your cup of coffee, and neither are you Geek enough to DIY PS3 jailbreak, here’s some good news for you. XDA-Developers have managed to mod PlayStation 3 with Android phones. The hack allows you to backupof your PS3 games, run unofficial apps, and possibly otherOS (Linux) support too.

Disclaimer: Hacking or modding your PlayStation 3 (PS3) might result in Sony banning your console from PSN (PlayStation Network). Use it only at your own risk.

Tested: Works with Nexus One, HTC Desire. Should work as-is with most Android Phones.

HowTo Jailbreak PlayStation 3 / PS3 Fat, Slim

Pre-requisite: Rooted Android

Step 1: Download this, extract the file named “N1-CM6-PSFreedom.tar.gz” and copy the contents of that to your Android phone’s SD card along with “PS3-signed.zip” and “PS3-no-more-signed.zip” and reboot your phone into recovery console. (you can hold down trackball while pressing power button for NEXUS One)

Step 2: Using the standard procedure, Flash update from “PS3-signed.zip” and reboot.

Step 3: Use a terminal app (ConnectBot will do just fine) and type in the following commands:

cd /mnt/sdcard
su
insmod psfreedom.ko

Step 4: Now, Switch off your PS3 as per the model:

• For PS3 Fat Model: switch off from back
• For PS3 Slim Model: unplug console from wall.

and connect your Android phone via USB to your PS3 console.

Step 5: Switch on your PS3 and press the power button followed by eject button in quickly, one after the other.

Step 6: Voila! Your PlayStation 3 is now hacked to support “backup & play games from HDD“. Go to Game under Cross Media bar, and you should see “Install Package Files”.

Returning Android Phone back to normal

You can now move your android to previous non-flashed state by booting back to recovery mode and flashing “PS3-no-more-signed.zip”.

Note: The hack isn’t perfect at the moment, and has some bugs related to your phone: Wi-Fi and USB Mass Storage will be disabled on your phone until original boot image is flashed back.
